Klaus Guingand, Artist
Behind the scenes of the movement #4

SC : So Klaus, this piece is called « In God We Trust » 1 million dollarts cash, which is exactly what the Federal Reserve produces in the USA. So Pierre Restany signed one side of the bill and you signed the other, can you tell us more about this piece?

KG : It started in 1994 with the creation of the word DOLLART, with « ART » at the end Very quickly, I started studying the history of currencies, of the dollar and the American currencies, then of the world’s while I was at it. Then I studied the 100 dollar bill, the biggest American note and started working on it. I finish my work in 1999, so I show it to Pierre Restany, because I want him to be the expert of the « Dollart », he agrees, signs it then declares it. So here it is, it is 1 million Dollarts, it weighs 10 kilos, the federal reserve of the USA prints 550 of those every day and packages it exactly this way.

SC : So there are more than 1 billion dollars printed every other day?

KG : Yeah, that’s right, every other day, so the wads are always packaged this way, but that’s also for practical reasons. Because when you must deliver 50 million to a bank or financial institutions, you deliver 50 units. So this piece is about the value of art, because from the end of the 90s – early 2000s. I was getting annoyed by the fact that we started seeing the first reports, the first articles, on the news. The first big records of contemporary artists at auctions. We used to hear about this but it was always about dead artists like Picasso, Matisse, Rembrandt… who were bought by Japanese or so. But now, it’s happening with living artists, and I realized that the people who were supposedly interested in art were actually only interested in the price! So those artists were becoming financial products, besides, I don’t get why they are not called financial products. They are brands, for one, yes, they are brands, financial products, they’re only doing entertainment. There is no depth, nothing, it’s empty and that’s for sure, a tasteless food but it’s all about business, it’s the market. So this piece’s question is: How much is art worth ? The worth of an art piece is not its price, its worth is its strength to penetrate into the brain of the person watching
